Another Dumb Mars Probe Op-Ed

A news website with which I am not at all familiar, MyTown.co.nz, has another op-ed in the Rod Liddle vein. While just as wrong-headed, the attempts at humor in this one aren’t so irritating and trite. It reads almost as if Ms. Franklin rewrote Liddle’s article with some local color and a bit more skill.

But what’s up with the “moon hoax” references? Is she being serious there? Or was it just an elaborate (and evidently unsuccessful) setup for the bitchslap “jokes” about Iraq and WMD at the end?

Joost Schuur has a blog titled Martian Soil. He takes more of a news-oriented approach, capturing all the latest news items related to Mars. It’s so good, I’ve added it to the sidebar.

After Columbia, X Prize Entrants Remain Committed to Space

A decent article reviewing the effect of the Columbia accident on the various X-Prize entrants. Unusually, the article correctly identifies what it is that is holding us back, and expresses proper perspective on the risks involved:

However, before humanity can go out and explore the universe in person, it will have to find a cheap way to transport people into space en masse. That’s where the X Prize can make a galvanizing mark, pushing independent enterprises to take the initial steps of commercialized space travel despite the risk involved.

“There’s risk in virtually everything you do, and you cannot mitigate it down to zero even by staying in your own home,” said Michael J. Gallo, CEO and president of American X Prize competitor Kelly Space and Technology. “I think the draw here is that you’re doing something that’s never been done before, something that’s worth doing.”

Seeing Red

Sci Fi Wire reports that the Sci Fi Channel will be broadcasting a six-hour miniseries based on Robinson’s Red Mars in late 2004.

I have the same issue with this adaptation that I have with the once-again-upcoming Atlas Shrugged adaptation: how can such a long and detailed novel be compressed into a few hours without losing a good part of its essence? While Red Mars is no Atlas Shrugged, it still is fairly complicated and detailed.

If it does succeed, however, adapting Green Mars and Blue Mars should be a snap: simply delete the endless gushing over lichens and such, and the remaining stories should fit neatly into six hours apiece. But even with the preachy environmental theme toned down, will people really want to sit through eighteen hours of human-bashing, anti-establishment cliches, and praise for communism?

First Up

International Competition?

I’m a little late to the game in posting this, but Robert S. Walker has an interesting op-ed in the Washington Times concerning the race into space.

I find the 3-4 year timeframe for permanent Chinese presence on the moon, suggested by the Japanese official, a bit optimistic. I think the U.S. could do it, if we really wanted or needed to. We have a great deal of technology and infrastructure available which could be readily bent to this purpose, along with the lessons learned from the first time around. The Chinese, however, have yet to orbit their first astronaut, and they do not have the funding in place to support that kind of all-out effort (an important point, since it’s doubtful that their space bureaucracy is any more frugal than ours).

On the other hand, if their program is focused from the start solely on getting to and staying on the Moon, I could see it happening within 7-10 years, after they first gain some practical experience with their spacecraft systems in LEO. Something to keep in mind is that they currently lack a Saturn-class launcher. Unless this changes (and I have heard of no plans or programs for such a vehicle yet), and soon, any Chinese effort will require rendezvous and docking/assembly of a vehicle in LEO. This will require some development and practice, even if the basic know-how is bought whole from the Russians, which takes up valuable time.

I’m willing to be surprised on this, but I don’t see the Chinese program currently at the point where 3-4 years is realistic.

As for his other points, regarding India and Japan getting drawn in to the manned space game, well…good, I say. Better that it should be private companies expanding human activity into space for commercial purposes, but at this point I’ll take what I can get, if it finally gets us off the LEO merry-go-round.
