Space Baby TV?

Someone else has already taken Bill Hartmann to task over his silly anti-commercialization comments in this article, so I’ll focus on Freeman Dyson’s intriguing suggestion regarding the purpose of manned activities in space:

A return to the Moon should be primarily an adventure and a test of survival skills, Dyson believes.

“With good television coverage and some genuine human drama, the public will probably be willing to pay for it,” he tells me. “Best of all would be to have a man-and-wife team and watch them raise the first lunar baby. If we go back with the pretence that it is for science, the public will probably switch to another channel.”

Would people really pay to watch an astronaut couple raise ‘The First Boy on the Moon’ or ‘The First Girl on Mars’? It doesn’t seem like such a concept would keep public interest over the years, and it surely wouldn’t be fair to the child — think “The Truman Show”. Who would like to grow up thinking they were brought into the world simply to be the fish in an interplanetary fishbowl? Or that they were indentured to the sponsors to whom they owe their existence?

Then there are the “human drama”-enhancing hijinks the producers might stage to boost ratings. Or the unfortunate probability that the kid in question might grow up to become an embittered “former child star”, rediscovered some decades later by “Where Are They Now?”, turning tricks in the red-light warrens of Syria Planum to pay for a thousand-credit-per-week Dust addiction.

On the other hand… the ‘First Child’ on the Moon or Mars (or in space or on an asteroid or gas giant moon or what have you) will someday be born. If it happened in the routine development of a permanent settlement, rather than as a publicity stunt or TV-show gimmick, it might be interesting as a sidebar to the primary attraction of the settlement itself. Coverage in the form of occasional updates would be more palatable than a lurid, intrusive, moment-by-moment documentary of his/her life. Somehow, though, I don’t see such coverage filling the inspirational role Dyson describes — precisely because it isn’t lurid and dramatic enough for a reality TV show.

It’s a moot point, anyway…by the time an astronaut couple could get to the Moon (let alone Mars), the whole reality TV fad will have long since died the death of disco.

Ouch

Tempting as it is to gloat over Boeing’s troubles of late, when it comes down to it it’s not really a laughing matter. As this article points out, Boeing may have shot itself in the foot (both feet? a centipede’s worth of feet?), but that doesn’t change the fact that their woes have a big impact on the rest of the economy.

Of course, dropping the 767 doesn’t necessarily leave Boeing with a hole in its menu. The company has many overlapping products that it could offer in place of the 767. For instance, in terms of passengers, the 757 product line and the new 7E7 matche most of the 767’s capacity, with the 737-900 picking up the slack at the low end, and the 777-200 covering the higher end. In terms of take-off weight (which I took as a relative measure of cargo capacity), the 7E7 again matches the 767, though the other product lines are significantly higher or lower — not much alternative there. And in terms of range, the 777-200 and -300 have ranges in the same class as 767. I’m not a market analyst by any stretch, but it strikes me that whatever attribute you’re interested in in a 767 model, there’s another model that does much the same. Granted, cost is also a big factor, but all but the 777 models cost less than 767 models (I didn’t look at 747s as substitutes, and there was no price info on the 7E7).

So, could Boeing live without the 767? It could still meet its customers’ needs, yes, but unless it has already reached the break-even point in 767 sales, closing the line might entail a good bit of financial pain. The company could alternatively consolidate its product lines, dropping some of the overlapping 757 and 737 models and finding some means to trim the prices of the relevant 767 models — thereby keeping all of the families in production. But one has to wonder why, when the 767 is struggling, Boeing would introduce an all-new family of jet which directly competes with it in several areas (the 7E7). Yet more overlap, unless they do plan to pare down their catalogue as the Dreamliner enters service.

Frank Sietzen looks into his crystal ball and divines the Administration’s new long-term focus for NASA.

O’Keefe “worked to build a consensus” for renewed U.S. manned spaceflight beyond shuttle and station. The return to the Moon by U.S. astronauts possibly by the end of the next decade became “by default” the least expensive and risky of the paths proposed for the U.S. space program.

Bush will call for renewed U.S. activities leading to leadership of space exploration “in the Earth-Moon system” that could include manned lunar landings, the employment of a series of commercially-available launch vehicles and upper stages, new robotic lunar probes that will include orbiting communications and navigation relay satellites, and the development of a “flexible” manned spacecraft that is likely to be a form of the proposed Orbital Space Plane, but no new advanced launchers, large Apollo-style space vehicles or reusable replacements for the shuttles. Creation of a manned lunar base would evolve from more limited landings, if at all.

Development of new, advanced space technologies that would reinvigorate the space program and industry has been more of a focus of the effort than the use of the Moon itself, the source said. Military use of space and military test beds were also key elements in gaining acceptance of the renewed space plan. Testing of the Prometheus atomic rocket would also be a part of the plan.

The existing space shuttle fleet will play a crucial role in the plan by use of its heavy lifting capabilities in an unmanned form. Use of the existing U.S. expendable Delta and Atlas fleet as well as the remaining three shuttles was mandated early on, the source indicated. Part of this exercise has also been a parallel effort to arrive at a retirement date for the shuttle. That had yet to be agreed upon, this column has been told.

While Atlas V (and Delta IV) are nominally private launch vehicles, one has to wonder how much, if any, of this activity will involve private/commercial players — or whether this “new vision” will be just for NASA and DoD. It is interesting to note, however, that DoD is expected to have greater involvement with NASA in this predicted future. The military (to my eye) takes a longer view of technology and capability development than does NASA, patiently developing new weapons, communications, surveillance and other advanced systems over many years, and incrementally improving the capabilities of the systems it already has.

Curiously, Sietzen’s article mentions that there are no plans for new advanced launchers or large space vehicles, yet describes the Shuttles being used in unmanned form. Oh please please please tell me that the “pilotless Shuttle” concept is not seriously being considered — if you aren’t sending humans on it, there is no good reason for sending the Orbiter up. The only good reason for using Shuttle elements, unmanned, is to launch large or heavy items beyond the capacity of other lifters — launching unmanned doesn’t gain you all that much in payload mass, and does nothing to change the payload envelope. Taking out the crew cabin to enhance mass capability and maybe add a bit of envelope length would not only be hugely expensive but would permanently remove the affected Orbiter from manned service (not automatically a bad thing, if something else is available, but something to keep in mind) — the expense of the modifications and the ongoing expense of Orbiter maintenance and operations might justify the development of a (non-SSME) Shuttle-C. If, that is, heavy-lift is actually needed for some reason.

The article also indicates that someone has been listening to the calls for a “divestiture” of certain NASA responsibilities. Unfortunately, Sietzen indicates that this idea is politically unpalatable to some, and so is to be pushed off until after the election if not indefinitely/permanently.

Archimedes Pr?fung Erfolgreich

Mars Society Deutschland successfully tested the inflation of a balloon for use on its planned Archimedes Mars balloon mission (note: the Google translation of the original press release is a bit erratic).

Archimedes will carry a high-resolution camera, magnetometer, and meteorology package, and is expected to hitch a ride with the P5-A mission to Mars in 2007 or 2009.
