MORE SATURNALIA: Save The LUT is a web initiative to save Launch Umbilical Tower #1, the only remaining (uncannibalized, anyway) tower from the Apollo program.

I visited KSC in April, having no idea that the tower was still in existence. A wrong turn behind the Administration building led us past these gigantic orange cubes built from iron beams. It took me a minute to recognize it, but sure enough, there it was — a Saturn umbilical tower, cut into segments and placed in a field.

It’s sad, really, to have preserved it but not preserved it.

TODAY’S THEMIS IMAGE: Ares Vallis polygons.

This jumble of eroded ridges and mesas occurs within Ares Vallis, one of the largest catastrophic outflow channels on the planet. Floods raged through this channel, portions of which are up to 25 km wide, pouring out into the Chryse Basin to the north….Polygonal terrain on Mars is fairly common although the variety of forms and scales of the polygons suggests multiple modes of origin. Those in Ares Vallis resemble giant desiccation polygons that form in soils on Earth when a moist layer at depth drys out. While polygons can form in icy soils (permafrost) and even lava flows, their presence in a channel thought to have been carved by flowing water is at least consistent with a mode of origin that involved liquid water.[emphasis mine]

DAILY THEMIS IMAGE: Today, it’s a crater nearly buried by later volcanism.

With a location roughly equidistant between two of the largest volcanic constructs on the planet, the fate of the ~50 km impact crater in this image was sealed. It has been buried to the rim by lava flows. The MOLA context image shows pronounced flow lobes surrounding the crater, a clear indication of the most recent episode of volcanism that could have contributed to its infilling. Breaches in the rim are clearly evident in the image and suggest locations through which lavas could have flowed. These openings appear to be limited to the west side of the crater. Other craters in the area are nearly obliterated by the voluminous lava flows, further demonstrating one of the means by which Mars renews its surface.

TODAY’S THEMIS IMAGE: Trouvelot Crater Deposit.

Like many of the craters in the Oxia Palus region of Mars, Trouvelot Crater hosts an eroded, light-toned, sedimentary deposit on its floor. Compared with the much larger example in Becquerel Crater to the NE, the Trouvelot deposit has been so eroded by the scouring action of dark, wind-blown sand that very little of it remains. Tiny outliers of bright material separated from the main mass attest to the once, more areally extensive coverage by the deposit. A similar observation can be made for White Rock, the best known example of a bright, crater interior deposit. The origin of the sediments in these deposits remains enigmatic but they are likely the result of fallout from ash or dust carried by the thin martian atmosphere.

DEFERRED MAINTENANCE: From the sounds of it, Kennedy Space Center is starting to resemble downtown Detroit in the mid 80’s.

This doesn’t sound good at all. But it’s entirely predictable. When your funding comes from the federal budget rather than investors, there is less incentive to maintain your capital — just use it until it wears out, patch it up to keep it going, and beg for money to replace the old equipment with something bright and shiny new. It’s not like you ever have to recoup the investment or anything. Better to throw a hundred million a year into pork programs and set-asides instead of preventative maintenance and upgrades, and then cry for emergency funding when everything falls to pieces.

From what I can glean from the article and personal knowledge, the “priority” scheme described in the article sounds an awful lot like an “expediting” arrangement — a system in which tasks are continually reprioritized based on urgency, rather than following an orderly, planned schedule. It doesn’t take much for such systems to become corrupted — crisis becomes the norm, with every task being inflated to a “top priority” in order to bump it to the head of the queue and maybe get it addressed. Mundane, routine “broken windows” type tasks then don’t get addressed, as the people involved know that such matters will never be assigned a high enough priority for action to be taken…”Why bother?” becomes the ingrained response to those small issues, until they eventually snowball into an attention-getting crisis.

You can bet that the bulk of the maintenance backlog at KSC started out this way, as little problems. The little drip in the roof that could have been patched before it turned into a torrent that caused structural damage. The spot of peeling paint that grew into a serious corrosion issue because no one came to touch it up. The ten-thousand-dollar specialty tools that sit unused because a five-dollar consumable part is out of stock and the order for more doesn’t have a high enough priority. It isn’t just big, headline-grabbing breakdowns like cracked flowliners or vent lines or crawler bearings, it’s the simple housekeeping stuff that isn’t getting addressed.

(In fairness, the crawlers have probably more than recouped their initial investment, in the sense that they have lasted many times longer and been used many more times than they were in the program for which they were built. Which just proves the point — built correctly, and properly maintained, your infrastructure can last a long, long time. I have serious trouble believing that, if the facilities had been properly managed through careful use of the funds already available over the years, the maintenance problem would be as great as it is.)

SUCCESS! Looks like the new Atlas V made it to orbit as planned.

(Just because I think startups should be doing this doesn’t mean I can’t cheer when someone else “gets it right”.)

Red Mars?

“China aims high with Mars mission”. So, it seems the Chinese are planning to head to Mars by 2040 — nothing like a bit of ambition in a space program. Too bad we don’t have that here.
