Figuring Out What Happened

It’s going to be more difficult this time around. There is video which apparently covers the moment of breakup, but it is news footage and not a high-resolution tracking camera so its forensic value is questionable. And the wreckage is unlikely to offer any clues, given the velocity and the altitude.

The talking heads are saying that it is possible that we have footage (or whatever else they record) from spy satellites designed to pinpoint “heat spots” indicating missile launches or explosions.

The telemetry is probably all they’ll have to work with. Hopefully that will be enough.

Looming Problems

I think it is highly unlikely that there will be a long stand-down this time as followed 51-L.

For one thing, NASA can’t do it. Progress and Soyuz flights can be used to periodically reboost the station, but it would be (as I understand it) extremely impractical to use Soyuz for crew rotation on such a short notice as this (due to production rates and the number of flights that would be required). The ISS crew has available a Soyuz for their return, so they aren’t trapped up there like the cosmonauts on Mir when the USSR disintegrated. Soyuz could be used to ferry up a replacement crew in the manner of the Apollos supporting Skylab, but there is no way that NASA can use other vehicles for delivering science payloads or station elements. This would cut into the station assembly schedule, driving the costs (even further) through the roof. No, NASA can’t afford another 2 year, 8 month stand-down.

For another thing, this isn’t such a shock as was Challenger. Back then, Shuttle flights were touted as routine and safe…safe enough for a civilian educator to fly, whose presence compounded the shock of the disaster even further by focusing more public attention on that flight than any other perhaps since STS-1. We’ve been told ever since that spaceflight has inherent dangers, that it shouldn’t be regarded as safe and routine in the way it had been before 51-L. It’s a shock, but it’s one that the American people are likely to take in stride this time.

We will be flying again this year. This won’t by any stretch of the imagination end the space program.

But what happens now with other programs? Will this accident result in another Shuttle Orbiter being built from the tooling and structural spares now in storage (as happened with Endeavor)? Or will it provide the push required to actually make someting from OSP? What will happen to Prometheus, now that the anti-nuclear watermelons have a bold, front-page event to point to to “prove” their case that spaceflight is too dangerous for nuclear materials? Will the space program be slowed as a result of this?

NASA PAO Announcements

Contact with Columbia was lost at 8AM Houston time, when the Shuttle was traveling at approximately 200,000mph and 12500mph. Search and rescue teams in DFW and other areas have been activated per NASA contingency plans. Debris should be avoided, and its location reported to authorities.

Farewell, Columbia

I’m out of town on travel at the moment, and before I left I asked my parents to call me if anything newsworthy happened.

After reading Steven Den Beste for the past week, I was expecting the war to start today. With war further delayed, I wasn’t expecting any sort of phone call this morning, asking me if I had access to a television and telling me to check the news.

Wow.

All the TV is showing at the moment is the video from the Waco television station, the streaks crossing the sky much like Challenger without the fireball. Not much else, just pundits opining about what might have happened, and what was going on on-board at the time (assuming a nominal mission). No pictures of the wreckage yet — and unlike Challenger, Columbia’s wreckage will all fall over land. (In fact there is an official on the news right now describing what will happen if you approach the wreckage if it is polluted with hypergolic propellants…ie:keep away from it).

Nuclear Nutters

Not exactly a defense of space nuclear power, it’s more like a luddite litany of Chicken Little scenarios. The usual doomsday dreams, of course…the military will control the world, the smallest accident will kill all life on Earth, space exploration will take food from the mouths of starving children, etc., etc.

Oh boy…if this is the best the anti-space watermelons can come up with, firing up Prometheus should be a…SNaP.

Promethean Silence

Nope. No mention of Prometheus in the State of the Union speech.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised — after all, the President had some more pressing issues to talk about. It is nice, however, to see the kind of fighting attitude that is emerging in defense of space nuclear power. I’ll post more links later (scavenged from other blogs, unfortunately — I don’t expect anything new on my part).

I guess now we wait until Tuesday or so, to see what’s in the 2004 NASA budget.

OSP Broadside

Keith Cowing posts over at NASAWatch that the new requirements for the redirected OSP program will fit on one sheet of paper.

(Of course…he doesn’t say how big that sheet of paper is…or how small the print…)
