Technical Difficulties

I’m only getting intermittent broadband service tonight, so no posting (other than this).

Also, after running up against my storage limit, I’ve had to delete the individual archives of past entries, resorting instead to just the montly archives. Which means your permalinks to individual articles may not work. I should probably delete the monthly archives and go with individuals only, as that is probably only a little more memory intensive…..MT experts? What say you?

The State of Science Fiction

Spider Robinson (last seen around these parts getting a vigorous fisking) wrote an interesting op-ed in the Globe and Mail last week concerning the state of science fiction. Slashdot has a great follow-up discussion on the article and the problem Robinson describes.

For all my earlier crankiness towards him, I think he’s spot-on with this description of the state of SF. I used to be a voracious SF reader, but several years ago I noticed that the genre was rapidly declining in quality. I noticed it because it was increasingly difficult to find a “science fiction” novel which didn’t in some way incorporate magic and the supernatural, junk science, radical political agendas, inexplicable anachronisms in characters or settings, gratuitous violence, unpleasant philosophies, pessimistic worldviews, and just plain unrealistic fictional environments. I got tired of reading preachy, negative stories about how our world was going to hell in a handbasket, and how it was all because of science and technology and evil human nature. (Ironic, considering one of my favorite sub-genres is the post-apocalypse story.)

Oh, and the cover art sucks, too.

It’s very difficult to find SF I’m willing to buy, and I’ve long since read through the complete works of the writers I’ve found I like.

Perhaps he’s right (and I hope so) that this is only a protracted lull in the genre’s cycle, and that new writers with new perspectives and fresh ideas will soon appear to start another upswing.

Worth the Risks?

Are NASA’s Human Shuttle Flights Worth the Risk?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – There’s little doubt that NASA (news – web sites) can get its space shuttles flying again, but seven months after the deadly Columbia accident, there are plenty of doubts about whether it should.

True, and those doubts were expressed even before the Columbia accident. The reality is that we are stuck with Shuttle in the near term, unless we plan to mothball or abandon ISS and put human spaceflight on the promise of OSP (or something else) becoming available soon.

With no clear vision for why the United States is pursuing human space flight, a tight national budget and a scathing critique of the U.S. space agency’s “broken safety culture” coloring the debate, some in Congress wonder if sending humans into space at this point is worth the risk.

The first sentence answers the the question in the last. No, it isn’t worth the risks to send humans into space if there is no clear vision for sending them there. Hence the calls for a new goal for NASA (namely, Mars).

“We’re putting American men and women at great risk for their lives, flying orbiters that are 30 years old that cannot be made safe,” Rep. Joe Barton, a Texas Republican, told NASA chief Sean O’Keefe at a congressional hearing. “My proposal is … to use these orbiters in an unmanned capacity, build a new space plane or space orbiter that’s just for people.”

Yeah, right, Joe. It’s going to take 3-5 years for OSP to get to its first test flight, if it makes it that far. Are you and your pals in Congress willing to pony up the cash for the Russians to launch our astronauts to ISS in the meantime?

Another Texan, Democratic Rep. Ralph Hall, pushed O’Keefe to commit to developing an escape vessel for shuttle crews.

Stupid idea, if he’s thinking of a jettisonable cabin, ejection seats, or the host of other retrofits which have been proposed over the years. By the time you tear apart the three remaining Orbiters and retrofit them with some no-doubt hideously expensive escape system, you might just as well build all new vehicles.

But perhaps Sen. Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican, put the question most starkly at an earlier hearing: “Are we throwing good money after bad?”

Yes. But the time to have asked that question was back in 1986. Or 1972. But since your colleagues and predecessors didn’t, we’re stuck with Shuttle for now, and it’s going to cost a good bit of money to fix the problems. If, that is, we intend to keep sending humans into space through the near term.

So far, recovery from the Feb. 1 Columbia disaster has cost nearly $400 million, about the price of one shuttle launch. This does not include changes to the shuttle program recommended by the independent Columbia Accident Investigation Board in its highly critical report released on Aug. 26.

As is so often the case in government, they can find the money to pick up the pieces and fix the problems after something catastrophic happens, but can’t be bothered beforehand.

Yet even as the board flayed the U.S. space agency for its skimpy budgets, uneven safety record and habit of turning a deaf ear to engineers’ concerns, the final report presumed that “the United States wants to retain a continuing capability to send people into space, whether to Earth orbit or beyond.”

That’s the general assumption, yes. But as noted above, there is no clear vision for why we should want to do so.

Congress Gets It

Or seems to, anyway:

At his third Capitol Hill appearance since the Aug. 26 release of a highly critical investigators’ report on NASA’s role in the fatal Columbia accident, O’Keefe told the House of Representatives Science Committee there had been no clear vision for human space flight since the Apollo moon missions of the 1960s and 1970s.
“But we have no goals,” said Rep. Joe Barton, a Texas Republican. “We’re not going to the Moon, we’re not going to Mars. … We have no goals, isn’t that true?”
“I beg to differ, sir,” O’Keefe replied. “The strategic plan … is a stepping-stone approach and will achieve (human missions) beyond low-Earth orbit to achieve any exploration.”
Rep. Nick Lampson, a Texas Democrat, took issue with O’Keefe’s approach: “I happen to have the philosophy that you can achieve more technologically if you have someplace to go.”

Hmm. Nick Lampson is to be expected, but I’m impressed that Joe Barton is coming around, and is no longer demanding that humans be grounded until some mythical “safe” spacecraft can be designed and built.

Looks like that Shuttle-derived heavy lifter idea is getting noticed. Unfortunately, Mr. O’Keefe seems to be poo-poohing the capsule/SDV ensemble, presumably in favor of the latest NASA paper queen.

Dumb

Everyone else seems to be commenting on this story today, so I’ll add another voice to the chorus of “what the #$%# were they thinking?”

No, this kind of accident doesn’t “just happen” — judging from the facts presented in the brief report, it was due to at least two unpardonable failures on the part of the technicians: first, those who removed the bolts without notifying anyone that they had done so, and second, those who attempted to turn over the satellite without first doing a check on the fixture as per procedure.

Had even one person in either group been doing their job properly, the incident never would have happened.

Beyond the parties immediately involved, however, there are two other players who should answer for this: the transportation and handling crew (who task it ought to have been to turn over the satellite, and thus check the fixture over before doing so — why were techs moving it?), and the production operations personnel in that area (who should have been aware that there were insufficient bolts for two satellites, and requisitioned a sufficient number — and who should also have picked up on the techs not following instructions).

I’m not at all surprised that such a thing could happen, though, as the first thing that came to mind when I first saw a turn over cart was that it was an accident waiting to happen.
